Tizen OS: platform design system and core apps

Led OS-level interaction principles and the Tizen design system across phones, watches, TVs, and appliances, and designed the core multimedia experiences, Gallery and Photo Editor, with my own hands.

The problem

Tizen is Samsung's operating system for phones, watches, TVs, and home appliances. Designing for it meant platform-level decisions: the same principles had to hold on a 1.3-inch round watch face, a 55-inch TV ten feet away, and a phone in someone's hand, with different screens, input methods, and hardware limits on each. Consistency, scalability, and usability had to be decided once and then survive every product category.

My scope was Tizen mobile from concept to global launch: the OS-level interaction principles, the design system, and the core multimedia experiences.

What I did

  • Planned the OS-level interaction principles and system architecture, from concept to global launch.
  • Designed the core multimedia experiences myself: Gallery and Photo Editor, as a hands-on contributor.
  • Defined and documented the Tizen design system used across mobile, watch, TV, and appliances.
  • Reviewed and guided the other core apps so the system held together across teams, giving system-level feedback rather than screen-by-screen fixes.
  • Mentored junior designers and worked with product managers, engineers, and researchers across teams.
  • Contributed to accessibility and usability work for diverse user groups and markets.

Results

Interaction patterns defined for mobile were adopted across the other product categories, and the design system let teams ship consistent experiences on four kinds of device without re-deciding the basics. The core multimedia experiences launched globally with the platform. The review practice, where I checked other teams' designs against the system, is the part I would keep on any platform team.

What I took from it

A design system is only as good as the review that enforces it. Writing the principles down was the smaller half; the larger half was sitting with other teams, reading their screens against the system, and explaining the reasoning until the system was theirs too. Deep collaboration with engineering and respect for hardware limits made the difference between a document and a platform.
